I like science because I love trying to understand how life works. I’ve always been amazed with how many different variations there are of life – from plants, to bacteria, to mushrooms, to whales. Each one has found a different solution to staying alive.

It’s like discovering the secret of magic, and then learning it’s not magic at all – just nature. Which in my mind is even cooler.

Well, penggirls with the excellent name, I don’t like all science! I actually only like a really small tiny area of science: human genetics.

I think the reason I like it is cos I like to understand how the body works, and how characteristics are inherited. I like the ‘problem-solving’ part where I have to look at a patients symptoms and try and decide whether they are likely to have a genetic condition and I like talking to the doctors in charge of the patients to explain what we have found in the lab. But mostly I like that my science helps people to have choices about their medical care. It sounds like a cliche, but it’s really rewarding.
