Safety Assessment department has two main divisions. 1). Toxicology:- Study of toxic (poisonous) new chemicals and test them on non-human species or models like small laboratory animals to evaluate safety and make decisions about appropriate dose of drug when it goes to patients. (e.g. If your doctor will tell you to take medicines three times a day..you might think why can’t I take all once a day???The answer is NO…as our body is designed to accomodate only certain amout of dose at certain period..so every action has a reason in science. 2). Pathology:- In Pathology we have two units.1). Histotechnology:- Histo means tissues..study of tissues…2). clinical pathology: Study on biological fluids like blood, urine, faeces etc… During or After toxicology department finishes their studies on non-human species Pathology department’s role starts. We analyse the body fluids like blood and urine to check and assess the effects of drug on body…and we collect and prepare the body tissues for microscopic evaluation to check any changes in cells or tissue structure due to drug…
Regulatory Environment:-And most important is we work with regulated and strict good laboratory practice environment where we follow all proper guidelines and most of us has home office UK liscences to perform certain laboratory procedures….It means we ensure the drug or molecule pass the safety and goes to patient will have higher integrity and confidence…Our thinking is every person should do more, feel better and live longer…

My Typical Day:
My day to day routine in Histotechnology lab starts when toxicology study completed. 1). Fixation:-We required to fix the tissues in fixatives to prevent cells from autolysis. 2). Selection:-Once tissues been fixed we select the appropriate tissue for our sample( Because we can’t put whole kidney or liver on small glass slide!!)..3). Processing:- Our selected tissue is still soft and we need to provide hard medium to it so we can easily take small micron sections. so we pass them under series of chemicals. 4). Embedding:- We embed the tissues in liquid wax and keep the tissue block on Ice plate to make it solid . 5). Sectioning:- To see and check tissue and its cells under microscope we prepare small 3-4 microns sections on glass slides.5). Staining:- In order to differentiate cell nucleus and cytoplasm we stain them and now its ready for microscopy..really easy isn’t it??….now you all are masters…

Study Histologist: – As part of Study Histologist role i am direct point of contact for the Study Director, Study Pathologist and the designated Tox Support responsible licensee. The intention is to provide continuity of awareness of all study specific requirements from necropsy through to archiving. I am responsible for keeping the Study Director and Pathologist informed of continuous scheduling and histology process with the study e.g. slide completion dates, special stain results, missing organs, as well as presence of e.g. any significant macroscopic observations at necropsy. Being Study Histologist i attend pre study briefings to familiarise myself and group with the study design and purpose. The role will also involve the checking of the draft protocol and possible attendance at protocol review sessions. At a practical level, i will be responsible for ensuring the transfer of specimens to supporting divisions i.e. DMPK,IPT,Clin Path, as well as for the prompt filing of wet tissue and blocks after the study has been completed in addition to collating and quality check of slides to ensure we deliver best quality tissue slides to pathologists as per study protocol requirements.
Involved in routine maintenance of lab instruments, Internal Audit rota for all areas of division, acting as safety rep for formaldehyde and xylene monitoring. Working to create and update photographic guides for microtomy which will help to judge quality of slides. Fully trained for working on human biological samples.
Study Supervisor: Successfully completed training for study supervisor role (Next to study director) in Toxicology department. Started working as study director for Pathology based investigative studies.
Image Analysis: Working with imaging division for operation of Scanscope Slide Scanning Instrument, Spectrum database and Imagescope software as part of Digital pathology system.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I still do lots of student tours at our laboratory where students have hands-on experience with real science world.
