I was not forced into it at all! I really enjoyed watching nature documentaries, and I thought – wouldn’t this be cool to do as a job. But studying animals lead to learning about how they evolved, and here I am! I didn’t end up working in nature documentaries – but I do love what I do.

My mum was a nurse, so that’s what got me interested in healthcare science. I wasn’t forced into science at all, but I did feel that I had to get a ‘good’ job – I really wanted to be a beautician at one point but my mum was so disappointed – she felt I would be ‘wasting my education’. As I’ve got older I’ve realised you just have to follow your heart, and not worry about whether what you want to do is ‘good’ enough. Happiness is more important.

They say that every teenager rebels against their parents. My parents were hippy musicians, so maybe that forced me to rebel and become a scientist instead! I like science, but I like lots of other things too. I don’t like everything I do in my job, but in pretty much all real jobs there are things you like, and things you don’t like, and you have to do them all. You have to guess beforehand how many of each kind you’re likely to get, and whether the good stuff outweighs the bad stuff! In most science jobs the good outweighs the bad!
