Fragrances are small chemicals that can be made in a laboratory.

They are special chemicals that can attach to small proteins inside our nose called odorant binding proteins. Once they have been bound to the nose proteins an electrical signal is sent to our brain to let us know which chemical (smell has entered our nose).

Different combinations of these chemicals will make different fragrances and these will be made in a lab by chemists. The chemists know how to put the chemicals together, because they know how they will fit together by looking at the structure of the atoms that make up the chemicals.

Mae’s answer pretty much explains it. Although I would add, that there are professional “sniffers” who have a REALLY good sense of smell, who’s job it is to work out which smells go together to make a nice fragrance. It doesn’t really answer you question I just think it’s a really weird job! What is your job title? “sniffer”?

Fragrences are made in laboratory..they are basically chemicals which binds together to give protein reactions…and as Mae described out nose has ability to smell good and bad….
