7 to 8 hours per weekday with 2 (10 mins) Tea breaks and 1 (30 mins) lunch break…..If any urgent lab work is planned on weekend I might need to work for 2-3 hours on weekend…

It really depends on what I have to do. Sometimes I have long days in the lab, but sometimes if there is not much going on I can leave work early! I try to keep a 9 to 5 day but science doesn’t always work out that way! The good thing about working with bacteria though is I can always put my experiments in the freezer and come back to them when I’m ready.

From about 8.30am-7pm. It’s a tough life!!! Science is strange though, mostly you are thinking and the fact is that you can think on the train, whilst going for a run and you can even think before you go to bed. The main thing is to enjoy science, try to get things right, be honest and do your best at what you do. Office hours of 9am until 5pm should be acceptable. Remember…

      1) Enjoy it
      2) Get it right
      3) Be honest
      4) You will be great!

I work 7.5hrs a day, five days a week. I find it quite a long day, and many of the people in my lab work less than this. The NHS is very flexible about part-time working and so you can have a say in how much of how little you work. We all share responsibility for the work in my lab, so if something needs finishing when you are about to leave for the day, the late shift will take over for you.

Working as a University means you have funny hours. Compared to a typical job in the private sector (i.e. a ‘normal’ job) there is more flexibility about when you come in and go home, and most people come in late and stay late, usually 10am to 7pm. I’ve got kids so I come in early (about 7.30am) and leave early-ish, about 5pm. But I also work in the evenings and some weekends.

Most jobs that pay well involve longish hours, but if you like your job you won’t mind so much.
