Sun cream works by either absorbing or reflecting the suns harmful UV rays. UV rays can be harmful because they can damage your cells, increasing your risk of burning and skin cancer. SPF stands for sun protection factor, so what SPF 30 means is that your skin is 30 times more protected against the harmful sun rays which cause sun burn compared to if you wore no sun cream.

So to answer your question, you skin burn about 30 times quicker in the sun if you were without SPF 30 sun cream, compared to if you wore it. So slap it on!
