‘Contra’ means against and ‘ception’ means fertilization…….In simple term to avoid joining of male and female gametes during or after sexual activity… Gametes are responsible for birth of baby in animals and humans…To maintain birth ratio contraception can be done naturally or artificially.

Contraception stops sex resulting in pregnancy. There are lots of different types of contraception from condoms (which create a barrier to stop sperm entering the female), but there are also drugs (the pill, the injection) and things which are implanted in the body (which can go in the arm or the uterus) which can stop pregnancy. It’s important to remember though only condoms can stop pregnancy AND protect you from all sorts of diseases which can be passed on through sex. Drugs and implants do not protect you from catching these dangerous diseases.

Contraception is an invention to manage whether or not you would like to have a baby and helps with family planning when having sexual intercourse. There are many ways in which this can be done. There are physical barriers (for example condoms that in addition to preventing a baby prevent sexually transmitted infections and diseases) and hormonal techniques which act on the endocrine system. The NHS (National Health Service) is a free service and has a website which can tell you all about the different techniques. If you have any questions about general well being and lifestyle choice you can always book an appointment and ask your GP (doctor).
