A dream happens during a stage of sleep called R.E.M. (or rapid eye movement). During this time your brain activity is high, just as if you were awake, and your brain activity can be visualised as a dream. Some people think it’s really important for learning because it might be when we form new connections in the brain and cement what we have learnt in the day. Humans are not the only animals to dream – you might have seen your pets doing it too! Although it’s difficult to know if they have the same experience as us.

When you go to sleep, your brain might trick you into thinking you are awake. This is a dream.

Usually when you are awake the brain is in control and the cells in the brain will communicate with each other through electrical signals so that you can understand your environment. Different experiences (like birthdays) will open up new connections between the cells in your brain.

Some people think that dreams are caused by random activation of the cells in your brain, which are related to different experiences which explains why dreams can sometimes be very muddled and confusing.

Just to make it simple I would say brain and heart works 24*7…When we awake we understand all the activity by brain..during sleep/unconsciousness brain activity becomes dream….I would say this is really good question asked by you..
