When I was really young I wanted to be a ‘popstar’ (didn’t we all), then as I grew up I went from wanting to be a vet, to a beautician, to a doctor, to a forensic scientist to a Clinical Scientist! I guess I was just going through a process of narrowing down my interests, and learning about the different careers out there.
And I ended up as a Clinical Scientist, so I guess it worked out in the end 🙂 I didn’t get the job straight away though – it’s massively competitive, so I had to work as a technologist in a genetics lab to gain experience first (being the person who does the hands-on testing in the lab).
I wanted to be a vet originally, but I was too young to work at that age. My first taste of science was when I did my work experience at 15, and worked in some fish labs in my home town! My job was looking at the quality of the river we lived on. I really liked it, and I think that sent me on the path I’m on now – so yeah, I guess it did work out!
But in my time I’ve also been a waitress, a bar maid, a post office lady, I’ve worked in a pharmacists, I’ve been a child minder and worked in loads of offices as an assistant. So I’ve been loads of other things along the way – but I was doing those jobs for the money, not for the love :).
I wanted to be an army officer..I tried as well and got selected until the final interview stage where I got rejected…but it was my dream and during study I was best at science and science career was always my another option…and I am happy that I am part of this beautiful science world….
